The Patriots recorded their sixth shut-out of the season by defeating the Fresta Valley Pioneers 5-0. SVCA went up early scoring in the first 50 seconds of the game. Patriot midfielder Zach Nemec received a pass and made 2 good moves to beat a Pioneer defender. Nemec then chipped the ball over the defense to forward Adam Runion. Adam volleyed the shot past the charging goalie giving the Patriots the early lead. Ten minutes later, the Patriots struck again when Ethan McGann put the SVCA up 2-0 off a well-placed pass from Lee Runion. McGann played a pass to Lee at half-field who attacked the Pioneer defense off the dribble then slotted a great pass to a cutting McGann giving Ethan a 1v1 with the goalkeeper. McGann easily touched the ball around the goalie and into the lower right corner of the net. The goal marked McGann's 5th goal in the past 4 games. Defender Cameron Low recorded his first goal of the season with 8 minutes left in the half when the Patriots won their first corner kick of the game. Lee took the corner and once again played a great ball across the mouth of the goal. Cameron came right down the gut of the box and headed the ball cleanly into the back of the net giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead going into the second half.
SVCA got off to a slow start in the 2nd half staying off the scoresheet for the first 30 minutes of the half; however, at the 71st minute it was once again Cameron Low who opened up the scoring for the Patriots. Zach Nemec threw the ball into the Pioneers 6 yard box. After the ball pinged off a few players Cameron came through and cleaned up the trash toe poking a shot into the lower left corner of the net. The Patriots saved the last goal for best, however. At the 78th minute Lee Runion received the ball just inside the Pioneers half and took on 2 defenders. Runion beat both defenders with a pretty move inside the box and fired a left-footed rocket at the net. The Pioneer netminder took a good angle and was able to make a good save; however, the ball ricocheted out to defensive midfielder Zach Nemec about 35 yards out. Nemec took the shot in stride that sent the ball screaming past the Pioneer goalkeeper and into the back of the net giving the Patriots a commanding 5-0 win.
With the win, the Patriots stay in first place in the Northern District (10-4-1 overall, 4-1 conference). SVCA went 5-2-1 over their 8 game road streak. The Patriots now look forward to playing their first home game since September 17th when they take on Riverfront Christian on Friday at 4:30. The Patriots will finish in first with a victory Friday evening.
