The Patriots rebounded from Thursday's dissappointment with a stellar performance against the Fredericksburg Eagles. SVCA came out and took control of the game early dominating possession against a smart, hardworking Fredericksburg team. It was the Eagles, however, that struck first at the 16th minute by putting together a strong counterattack catching Patriots off-guard and giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. The Patriots refused to abandon their style of play and continued to keep possession of the ball. The Patriots' hardwork finally paid off when Ethan McGann scored off a free kick from 30 yards out. With 6 minutes left in the half, Junior Ethan McGann was fouled from about 30 yards out. The midfielder set the ball and hit a shot that dipped over the wall and into the upper 90 just inside the left post. The Patriots turned up the intensity and took the lead with just one minute to go in the half. Junior Lee Runion went past 3 Fredericksburg defenders and just before striking a shot was fouled about 20 yards out. Runion took the free kick and struck a rocket to the far post. Fredericksburg's netminder was able to get his finger tips on the ball causing the shot to hit the cross bar, but center defender John Bell was right on top of the ball heading it past the goalie and into the back of the net giving the Patriots the go-ahead goal going into halftime.
The Patriots played the second half the same way, keeping possession of the ball the majority of the half. SVCA gave themselves an insurance goal at the 70th minute. Freshman Mike Powell made a scrappy play winning the ball between 2 Eagle defenders and firing a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and landed inside the goal. Powell's goal proved to be the winning goal as the Eagles were able to clean up the trash around SVCA's net making it 3-2 with 2 minutes to play. SVCA outshot the Eagles 10-4 and Nathan Steve had 3 saves.
SVCA will return to action Tuesday when they take on VACA rival Fresta Valley in Warrenton. Kick-off is set for 5:00.
