The SVCA Patriots dominated a young Crusader team Tuesday evening at United by a score of 6-0. The Patriots came out early and controlled the pace of the game and found themselves open for several shots. United's netminder did a great job of keeping the Patriots out of the net early. The Patriots finally broke the tie at the 28th minute when Dustin Diehr was able to find Midfielder Ethan McGann at the top of the goal box. McGann took one touch to beat 2 United defenders giving him a 1v1 with the goalie. McGann calmly hit the ball into the lower left 90 of the net giving the Patriots a 1-0 advantage. McGann's goal proved to be the only goal of the half despite the Patriots outshooting the Crusaders 17-0.
The Patriots entered the 2nd half eager to put the game out of reach for the Crusaders. Once again the Crusader netminder did a great job of keeping his team in the game for the first 20 minutes of the half. The Patriots finally broke the scoreless half at the 60th minute when Lee Runion scored his first goal of the game. Forward Chuckie Tevault beat a Crusader 1v1 along the right goalline. The senior went at the goal but as the goalie stepped to him he quickly slotted a pass to an oncoming Runion who one-timed a shot into the back of the net. Runion's goal opened the scoring gates for the Patriots. Three minutes later, newcomer Jayden Mason recorded his first goal of the game by beating the Crusader goalkeeper 1v1 and touching it into the back of the net. Ethan McGann gained possession in the middle third of the field and played a perfectly placed through-ball to a sprinting Mason. Jayden controlled the pass, faked the shot as the goalie charged cutting the ball around the keeper and neatly passed the ball into the open net. Jayden scored his second of the game just 40 seconds later when outside midfielder Nick Franks fired a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper. The ball shot up in the air at the top of the 6 yard box and Mason was able show off his leaping abilities by going up and heading the ball giving the Crusader goalie no chance of saving the shot. Ethan McGann recorded his 2nd goal of the game at the 75th minute when he was assisted by fellow midfielder Lee Runion. Runion collected a pass on our defensive half and played a beautiful chip to a slashing McGann. The Junior collected the ball and neatly curved a shot around the goalkeeper giving the Patriots a 5-0 lead. With 2 minutes left in the game Lee Runion scored his 2nd of the game by showing an impressive dribbling display before firing a shot to the far left corner of the net.
SVCA will take on an athletic RMA team Thursday evening in Front Royal before heading down to Fredericksburg Christian on Friday to finish off the week.
